Recognize automatic responses that may bypass fuller conscious examination.
04 · CHOOSE
Examine what is automatic—and what role your consciousness plays.
THE PROGRAM
This program examines the difference between automatic operation and conscious direction. It also introduces the LFS distinction between decision and choice: decision is applied internally; choice is exercised externally among available alternatives.
Recognize automatic responses that may bypass fuller conscious examination.
Establish internal direction through consideration, understanding, and conscious determination.
Examine what capacity, access, agency, or resources may be necessary before an external choice can actually be exercised.
Examine the alternatives available to you and what power you possess to act among them.
LFS PERSPECTIVE
A person may decide a direction before every external option is available. Strategy can then be used to develop the power necessary to expand what choices become possible.
WHAT YOU WILL EXAMINE
Identify where automatic responses may be operating.
Distinguish internal determination from external selection.
Ask what must be developed before a desired choice becomes realistically available.
